The US Air Force symbol consists of two main parts. The upper portion which includes the wings that represents the enlisted men and women of the force; and the lower part that embodies the sphere, star and three diamonds. It was introduced in January 2000. Guidelines that outlined appropriate uses for the new Air Force symbol were released March 23. The symbol was first tested on gates and water towers in August.

The Air Force Trademark & Licensing Program enforces the U.S. Air Force's trademark rights by working with Air Force legal counsel and the Department of Justice for instances requiring legal action.
